Personal Spiritual Creatures

The Catholic account of angels joins spirituality to personhood. Angels have intelligence and will. They are creatures capable of knowing and acting, rather than names for impersonal forces alone.
This matters when modern explanations describe gods or angels as psychological patterns, collective moods, or fields. Such descriptions may illuminate aspects of human experience. They do not exhaust the Church's claim that real created spiritual intellects exist.
The opposite mistake would give those intellects a naturally biological body. Spirituality does not mean finer matter or a hidden animal form. An account of a visible appearance needs to be distinguished from an account of nature.
The comparison with Greece must keep both points in view. If a tradition refers to a real angelic agent, the agent is personal and spiritual. Whether a particular tradition does refer to one remains a historical and interpretive question.
